Spoiler alert:
The May 2026 core update didn’t blow up search. It reoriented it…
SE Ranking just published their analysis across 100,000 keywords in 20 niches, and the pattern is unmistakable:
When Google looks at a query where people want honest human experience, it’s reaching for Reddit.
When the query demands authority or precision, Reddit stays out. The update isn’t random volatility. It’s intentional sorting by question type…

Reddit’s share of the TOP 3 rose from 8.56% to 10.24%.
That’s 1 in 10 top results now belonging to Reddit.
More significantly:
The number of keywords where Reddit ranks #1 jumped 54%…. From 8,993 after March to 13,872 after May.
This gain appeared across all 20 niches analyzed.
The strongest gains came in Pets (18.05%), Education (13.49%), Sports (12.77%), and E-Commerce (14.11%). These are experience-led categories. People asking “which dog breed is good for apartments” or “how do I learn Python faster” are looking for real people who’ve already done it. Reddit is the obvious answer and Google surfaced it more regularly.
The smallest gains came in Real Estate (3.73%), Healthcare (1.33%), and News & Politics (3.53%). I get this because these are the categories where wrong answers cost the most. So Google prioritizes things like accuracy, credentialed opinion, and regulatory compliance.
Basically, the update elevated Reddit threads where human judgment and lived experience are the actual ranking signal. It deprioritized Reddit for topics where expertise and accuracy are non-negotiable.
Why Does Reddit Show Up In Google’s Search Results So Much?
Three reasons. And if you’ve been following my work since 2018, you already know where this is going.
1. Searchers Showed Google With Their Behavior This Is What They Wanted
For years, people have been typing “best running shoes reddit” or “is this software worth it reddit” directly into the search bar.
Millions of people appending one word to their queries was the loudest possible signal a search engine can receive. Humans were telling Google: we don’t trust the polished affiliate roundup. We trust the stranger who actually bought the thing. Google listened. The “hidden gems” initiative, the forum and discussion SERP features, the helpful content updates… all of it is Google formalizing a behavior its users showed with actions that they wanted.
2. Google Pays Reddit For Data Access To Train Their Models
In early 2024, Google signed a licensing deal with Reddit reportedly worth $60M a year for data access. That deal gave Google real-time access to the largest corpus of authentic human opinion on the internet. When you’ve paid for the firehose, you find ways to use it. Reddit content now feeds Google’s AI training, its search results, and its understanding of what real people actually think about products, brands, and decisions.
3. Google Takes The “Experience” Part Of EEAT Very Seriously
When Google added the extra E to E-E-A-T (Experience), most marketers treated it as a footnote but it was the headline.
Experience matters. Experience is going to be surfaced. And experience is going to matter when it determines what content should be cited or surfaced.
AI can generate “expert” content at infinite scale, which means expertise alone is no longer scarce. What’s scarce is lived experience: the person who owned the dog, took the course, returned the product, tried the software, analyzed the data, etc…
Reddit is the largest searchable database of lived experience ever assembled. Google ranking it heavily in experience-led queries is the system working as designed.
How Does Reddit Influence B2B Buyers In Todays World?
Here’s the assumption that just died:
Reddit matters for consumer brands, but B2B buyers are irrelevant.
Technology saw one of the largest Reddit gains of any niche where it jumped from 4.77% to 7.03% of TOP 3 positions.
Business climbed to 12.17%. Career and Jobs sits at nearly 17%.
These are B2B categories. The categories every SaaS marketer assumed were protected by gated content and analyst reports.
In March, Foundation analyzed over 8,500 different keywords that SaaS brands ranked for and paid money to capture traffic from. In this analysis, we looked at search results and studied how often Reddit beat brands in the SERP for each individual keyword. For example, if there was no brand URL above Reddit; we deemed it a win for Reddit vs. the brands. If a brand ranked above Reddit (ie. a landing page or blog post) we marked it a win for the brands.
Here’s what the data showed:
We’ve been saying for years that the distribution layer is where the real competition happens.
We built Foundation on the principle that distribution mattered more than most people think.
This update confirms it.
Here’s what B2B SaaS marketers need to know going into the rest of the year…
What The May Core Update & Reddit’s Rise Mean For B2B Tech
1. B2B buyers research like consumers now
Before anyone fills out your demo form, someone on that committee typed “[your product] vs [competitor] reddit” into Google. They’ve read the pricing complaints. They’ve seen the implementation horror stories. They know what churned customers say when nobody from your brand is watching. Google just made that research easier by ranking those threads higher.
2. Reddit is where your real reputation lives
Your case studies are testimony from witnesses you paid. A thread where an anonymous RevOps lead explains why they ripped out your tool after six months? That’s evidence. Skeptical buyers weigh it accordingly. The brands winning in these threads earned it through product quality and authentic community presence, never through astroturfing. Reddit’s immune system destroys fakers.
3. The threads compound into AI memory
This is the part most marketers still miss. Those same Reddit threads feed the training data and citations behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. When a buyer asks an AI assistant “what’s the best workflow tool for a 50-person agency,” the answer is shaped by years of Reddit conversations. Today’s thread becomes next year’s AI recommendation. The Google ranking is the visible layer. The memory layer underneath is the prize.
4. Almost nobody in B2B has a strategy for this
I started talking about Reddit for B2B in 2018. People laughed. Then Google started ranking it. Then the AI engines started citing it. The data now shows Reddit growing in every single niche analyzed and the window for early-mover advantage in your category is still open. Barely. Some brands have executed on Reddit with perfection. You can see their case studies here. But most B2B brands are still asleep at the wheel.
Here’s my honest take from the Reddit NYC offices breaking down what I think of the state of Reddit:
Your buyers are already in the threads. The only question is whether your brand shows up as the subject of the conversation or a participant in it.
The brands that figure this out in 2026 will own their categories’ conversations for the next decade. If you’re ready to get to work, get in touch with the leading Reddit marketing agency.
