Stripe just bid $53.4B for PayPal. Here’s the part nobody’s pricing in.

Free Content

Ross here. The biggest number in marketing this week came out of fintech. Stripe and Advent put $53.4B on the table for PayPal, and the reason should make every B2B marketer look up. On tap today: what that bid says about AI-led buying, the distribution stack that gets you cited, a live session with Profound, and a few things worth knowing.

THE BIG STORY

A $53.4B bid for the checkout layer

Stripe teamed up with private equity firm Advent International on a joint bid for PayPal at $60.50 a share. That values PayPal north of $53B, a 28% premium on the prior close. PayPal’s board has not responded yet, so this is an offer, not a done deal.

The number grabs the headline. The motive is what matters.

Bar chart comparing Stripe, PayPal, and combined organic traffic, showing PayPal at 361M annual visits versus Stripe's 49M, per Ahrefs data.

Analysts keep pointing to one thing… agentic commerce. PayPal brings roughly 440 million active accounts and about $1.8 trillion in annual payment volume. In a world where AI agents research, compare, and check out on a buyer’s behalf, whoever owns the consumer data owns the transaction.

Here is why it matters for you. The buying journey keeps moving inside AI. First it took the research. Now it is reaching for the checkout. When an agent can complete the purchase, the brands that get recommended inside that agent win before a human ever weighs the options.

I wrote up the full thesis, including the one chart that reframes the whole deal.

THE PLAYBOOK

Publish and pray is finished

More than half of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chat more often than they start in Google. 71% lean on AI somewhere in the buy. That is up from around 60% just seven months earlier, per G2’s 2026 survey of more than 1,000 buyers.

Those answers get built from sources outside your website. You get cited across them, or you stay invisible in the shortlist.

Our newest breakdown lays out the 5-layer distribution stack: where your content has to live to reach both the buyer and the model that answers them.

TOGETHER WITH PROFOUND

AI search is already describing your brand to buyers. Some of what it says is wrong. On Thursday, August 6 at 12:00pm ET, I’m co-hosting a live session with Profound’s Nick Lafferty on finding those errors and correcting them at the source. Seats are limited.

FROM MY DESK

New post this week. If I were starting my marketing career today, here is what I’d learn first. The short version: the fundamentals moved, and most people are still studying the old map.

If I Were Starting My Marketing Career Today, Here’s What I’d Learn First

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

→ ChatGPT now drives 92.4% of trackable AI referral traffic, from a study of 6.77 million sessions. If you are optimizing for one AI surface, start there. [Search Engine Land]

→ Google rolled its Search Console AI performance reports out to more accounts. You can finally see impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus a toggle to opt content in or out. A native measurement surface for AI visibility. [Search Engine Land]

→ GPT-5.6 hit general availability, and Sol is the new ChatGPT default. Raw model capability keeps commoditizing, which pushes the real edge toward citation quality and source authority.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO

On repeat this week: Larry June and The Alchemist… The Great Escape. Smooth, unbothered, and exactly the pace you want heading into the weekend.

ONE LAST THING

The through-line this week: money and attention are both consolidating around the AI layer of buying. Payments included. Hit reply and tell me one place you are seeing AI change how your buyers decide. I read every response.
